The Danish word væsen carries layered meanings: it denotes both being and creature, while also pointing toward essence—the fundamental constitution of something. This multiplicity is central to Vibeke Bertelsen’s exploration of how artificial intelligence reshapes human embodiment and identity.
In this series, algorithmic processes generate images that fragment, repeat, and distort the body into unstable forms. Rather than concealing these computational anomalies, Bertelsen foregrounds them as sites of critical inquiry. The glitches, dislocations, and recursive patterns reveal how machinic vision interprets corporeality—not as a coherent whole but as data, endlessly recombined.
væsen thus stages a confrontation between the human and the post-human, where identity appears simultaneously hyper-visible and radically destabilized.
