The fluidity of AI, for me, is precisely what constitutes its essence as a medium. A medium has never been a neutral tool; its very form generates meaning. For instance, the clock, as a medium, not only extends our perception of time but also invents concepts such as “punctuality” and “efficiency,” which in turn reshape modern subjectivity. If a medium can reconfigure subjectivity, it cannot remain a mere “surface-level tool.” It must traverse different strata of signs: code (abstract rules), signals (real-time generation and transmission), and material traces (the concrete manifestation of sound, image, and text). This fluid, cross-layer movement is precisely what enables AI to act upon human perception and subjectivity.
This code-based work materializes that logic through a video installation: the audience’s voice is captured via microphone and transformed into non-semantic numerical input, bypassing comprehensible text and directly exposing the raw information of GPT-2—token IDs. This machine-internal language, usually hidden, is at once abstract code and translatable into signals and material traces. The token IDs then circulate through screens, printers, cameras, and speakers, eventually feeding back into the microphone.
Each transmission introduces randomness, uncontrollable marks, and noise, generating an endlessly folding organic loop. Within this circuit, information continually traverses different semiotic strata, while in noise and deviation the medium’s own agency comes into view.
